He formed the band in the early to mid sixties as contemporaries of Fleetwood Mac, Savoy Brown and Chicken Shack and led them when their big break came at Woodstock. They split in the mid seventies and Lee formed a backing band and took off on a world tour which left critics and fans asking whether the band was Ten Years After or not. Chrysalis Records dropped the band and Lee confirmed the break up. Lee recorded his first solo album, "Road to Freedom" in 1973 featuring the likes of Jim Capaldi, Steve Winwood, Ron Wood, George Harrison, Mick Fleetwood and Mike Patto. He went on to record a number of good solo albums throughout the seventies and into the eighties before reforming TYA in the late eighties. He's still regarded as one of the UK's best guitarists.
Question (of The Dino Quiz number 166): Name the band formed by guitarist Alvin Lee in the early to mid sixties. Was it Chicken Shack, Ten Years After or The Strawbs?
